Joy Frith, PhD

Originally from Scotland, Joy completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Canada. Her doctorate, from Queen’s University (Dept. of History), focused on a study of gender, religion, and identity politics in nineteenth-century Britain. Joy has been teaching in international education since 2000 and joined FIE in 2013, where she teaches on the Transnational Studies and British Life and Cultures courses. She has also taught at Middlesex University, London, at Queen’s University and the University of Guelph in Canada. Other teaching interests include: gender and citizenship; feminism; religion and ethnicity in contemporary Britain; and London as a global city. Beyond the classroom, Joy develops research-based walking tours across London and in institutions including the National Portrait Gallery. Her most recent publication is “Accounting for Souls: Anglican Sisters and the Economies of Moral Reform in Victorian Britain”, in The Economics of Providence (Leuven University Press, 2012). Current research investigates how anachronistic time in London’s consumer spaces contributes to the articulation of British national identity.
