How much should I budget for my time in London?
How much you spend during a 15 week semester or 5-week summer program can vary massively depending on your lifestyle choices. Which.co.uk has some great advice on the average costs of a student monthly food shop, takeaways, and snacks, entertainment, etc. Just remember all of your accommodation 'bills' (rent, internet, water, gas, and electricity) and travel (Zones 1-2 in London) are already covered by FIE!
What do I do about cell phones?
FIE strongly advises all students have a working mobile phone for the duration of their program. Students are encouraged to get a local (UK/Irish) mobile number as this enables them in connecting with local venues, services such as restaurants and accommodation providers, and medical services without relying on data and/or WiFi access. Some FIE facilities are equipped with landline phones for internal calls, and FIE staff are available to connect students with emergency services if required.
Use your current cell phone (if unlocked) or buy a SIM-free handset and insert a new SIM card with a pay-as-you-go or monthly plan. There are many different types of SIM card plans, so make sure you shop around to find the best calls/text/data plan for you. Our local area map has a list of local phone stores. You can still use your cell phone from home for calls/roaming whenever you're connected to WIFI, but we don’t recommend buying international plans for your current phone as these are often expensive and you may face high roaming charges.
You can also install an e-sim on your phone, so you can switch over as soon as you land. You can look into getting one with your US or UK provider. More information on e-sims from a UK provider can be found here.
It is important to note many service providers (including non-emergency medical assistance) will not call an international (US) number, and international numbers are often not accepted when placing orders for deliveries including groceries and food.
