Along with the excitement and anticipation of planning to study abroad with FIE: Foundation for International Education comes the stress and woes of financing your experience. Don’t worry! You can afford to study with FIE! If you are currently receiving financial aid for your college education, in many cases you can use it to study abroad. This can be the case with aid from an institution, a foundation, the state or federal government, or any other private or public sources. Talk to your study abroad advisor, financial aid officer, or bursar about what can and cannot be applied to an FIE program of study abroad.
NAFSA: Association of International Educators has a great ‘Financial Aid & Study Abroad: Basic Facts for Students’ resource online to help you get started.
|In Case You Missed It: On June 19, 2017, the US Department of Education announced that the Pell Grant program was expanded year-round to include summer aid.|
HOW DO I ARRANGE TO HAVE FINANCIAL AID APPLIED TO AN FIE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM?
Meet with your study abroad advisor to decide on your FIE program and develop a budget for your study abroad program. FIE has an example of a Study Abroad Budget online that may get you started.
Upon application to an FIE study abroad program, contact your financial aid advisor to see if there are special application processes or policies required in receiving your financial aid for overseas study. Work with your study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor to determine your eligibility of your aid
Check with your bursar's office on how they can contact you while you are overseas and how they make financial aid disbursement arrangements
Be sure to check with all three offices, weeks before your plans are finalized. Keep records of all forms submitted and submission dates as well as all personal contacts made (individuals and dates of those contacts). Those records will help you avoid confusion as well as clarify issues that might arise
Be sure to apply for FIE Scholarships and check out the other scholarships available to help you study abroad. Be sure to check the deadline for all these scholarship applications as sometime they are over a year before you plan to study with FIE! You may also have additional resources through State Aid and assistance for Veterans.
